Why the Most Successful Men I Coach Are Losing Their Marriages — And What God Is Trying to Show Them

He built two 8-figure companies and one 9-figure company.

He woke up one morning, and his wife handed him divorce papers.

She wasn't leaving because she'd stopped loving him. She was leaving because she no longer trusted him — and after years of feeling like she came second to the empire he was building, walking away was the only way she knew to protect herself.

This man had proven every doubter wrong. His parents — the ones who laughed and said he'd amount to nothing but a factory worker. The classmates who voted him least likely to succeed. The coaches who picked him last. He had silenced every single one of them.

And in doing so, he had slowly, unknowingly, silenced his wife too.

The Pattern I See in Almost Every Christian CEO I Coach

In over 30 years of working with high-level Christian business leaders, I've sat across from hundreds of men who have different stories but the exact same wound.

The details change. The outcome doesn't.

Some were told they were stupid. Some grew up in poverty and swore they'd never go back. Some watched their fathers fail and vowed to be different. Some were simply wired with a fire that the world kept trying to extinguish.

Whatever the origin, somewhere along the way, success stopped being a goal and became an identity.

And that's where everything starts to quietly fall apart.

When Success Becomes Your Identity, Everything Becomes a Threat

Here's what most people don't understand about driven Christian men: they are not neglecting their families because they don't love them. They are neglecting their families because they are terrified.

Terrified of going back to who they were. Terrified that if they slow down, the whole thing collapses. Terrified that without the title, the revenue, the growth — they are nothing.

When your accomplishments become your identity, you will sacrifice anything on that altar to protect them. Not because you're selfish. Because losing it would feel like losing yourself.

This is what I call The Seduction of Success. It doesn't announce itself. It doesn't feel dangerous — it feels righteous. You're providing for your family. You're building something that matters. You're being responsible.

But underneath all that good intention is a wound that was never healed. And that wound is running the show.

The Altar No One Talks About

The Bible is clear that we were created to worship. The question was never whether we worship — it's what we worship.

Proverbs 14:12 says: "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death."

For many Christian CEOs, the altar isn't a false god in an obvious sense. It's their company. Their revenue. Their reputation. Their identity as a provider and a winner.

And the devastating irony is this: the very people they are building it for — their wives, their children — become the ones most likely to be sacrificed on it.

Not because these men are bad husbands. But because the wound driving them has never been brought before God and healed.

They are building empires with broken foundations. And the cracks eventually show up at home first.

What His Wife Was Really Telling Him

When that man's wife handed him divorce papers, she wasn't saying I don't love you.

She was saying I don't exist to you.

She was saying I have been competing with your need to prove yourself for years, and I am exhausted.

She was saying the man I married is in there somewhere, but I can't find him anymore.

This is the conversation I have with Christian business leaders every week. Not about their revenue. Not about their strategy. About the moment they realize that the most important boardroom they'll ever sit in is their kitchen table — and they've been a no-show.

The Good News: The Wound Can Be Healed

Here's what I want every Christian CEO reading this to understand:

Your drive is not the problem. The wound behind it is.

God didn't give you that fire to burn your family down. He gave it to you for Kingdom purpose. But Kingdom purpose built on an unhealed wound will always cost you more than it should.

The men I've watched transform — and I've watched hundreds — didn't become less successful when they did the deep work. They became more successful. More present. More respected by their wives, not less. More effective as leaders, not less.

Because when you're no longer running from something, you can finally run toward something.

And that changes everything.

If This Is You

If you read this and felt something stir — that uncomfortable recognition that your drive has a shadow side you've never fully examined — I want you to know: that feeling is not condemnation.

That's invitation.

God is not surprised by where you are. He's been waiting for you to be ready for this conversation.

Sacred CEO exists for exactly this moment. We work exclusively with Christian business leaders who are winning in the marketplace but quietly losing at home — and we help them build what actually lasts.

With his permission, I'm giving you access to the conversation that we had and the 3 strategies that I provided to him that changed the entire trajectory of his life.
